PERSONALITY |
Beliefs |
If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?
Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.
A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeeded be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.

2343 | Born in the infirmary at SB 24, near Khitomer. His mother is a science teacher, and his father is a professional archaelogist for the Federation. |
2348 | Attends the local primary school, where he distinguishes himself early as a very bright and eager pupil |
2355 | Family hosted a Romulan exchange student for one year. Forms a friendship with Delek, with whom he still corresponds. |
2355 | He and Delek jointly enter an exhibit on hydorponic plant growth in the school science fair, winning first prize. |
2356 | Family moves to SB 10, near the Romulan Neutral Zone, and the former Iconian Empire so his father can conduct expeditions to former Iconian planets that are on the Federation side of the border. He frequently accompanies his father on these trips. |
2357 | Attends SB 10 High School. |
2359 | His father discovers an Iconian artifact, some ancient machine which still appears to have a working power source, but cannot determine the machine's purpose. Martin, after sneaking into his father's lab one night unable to resist the temptation to examine the device, accidentally discovers that it's a form of Iconian entertainment, something which eventually leads to interesting insights into the culture of the long dead race. He and his father are invited to Vulcan to give a lecture on the device. It's his first ever speaking engagement. |
2360 | Graduates a year early, as Valedictorian, and accepts an invitation to study at the Vulcan Academy of Sciences. |
2365 | Receives a doctorate in Theoretical Astromechanics from the VAS, his doctoral thesis research advancing the understanding of star formation. Receives a grant to study stellar formation processes in the the Black Cluster. He takes up residence at SB 512, happy to be back on a starbase as he's not used to being planetside for long periods of time. |
2366 | While studying the Black Cluster, he makes several significant discoveries about neutron stars and "strange quark matter" stars, which have since become required reading in most Federation high school science classes. |
2369 | Develops a theory proving that stable wormholes can be manufactured with artificial quantum singularities. Although it's theoretically possible, practical concerns prevent a real wormhole from being created. He spends a great deal of time on Bajor conferring with local scientists and taking trips to the wormhole. |
2370 | Moves to Bajor full-time, and is invited to serve on the Provisional Government's Science Council. During this time he works towards reconstruction of Bajora society, by helping to design high-capacity replicators and transporter systems to aid in construction work. |
2374 | The Dominion War breaks out. Deeply concerned for the well-being of Bajorans, and feeling duty-bound to serve the Federation, he applies for Star Fleet, and is accepted. |
2374 | Owing to his age, education, and accomplishments, and the fact that officers are desperately needed, he is allowed to graduate from the Academy early with a field commission of ensign. He is posted to a Starfleet weapons lab in the Gamma Trianguli system. His recently declassified work includes: Chemical studies of Ketracel White, detailed analysis of Breen energy weapons, and a genetic study of captured Voorta. |
2375 | After the war is concluded, he is promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade after opting to stay in Starfleet. He is given a scientific shuttle based out of DS9 and leads a team of Bajoran/Federation researchers further studying the Bajoran Wormhole. |
2378 | His study of the wormhole is abruptly terminated when a local religious figure receives a vision that the prophets are unhappy with his methods of studying them. He doesn't believe this is true, and suspects a hidden agenda on the part of the priest. However, the Bajoran scientists pull out of the project and the Federation is pressured by the Provisional Government to stop it altogether. |
2378 | Posted to USS Firestorm as Chief Science Officer. |
